As ALARIS develops increasingly powerful intelligent
infusion systems for their hospital clients, the documentation
requirements for these systems has changed. In addition to the
clinical and biomedical technician audiences they previously addressed,
the new systems require the involvement of the hospital IT department
to implement the LAN and Wireless networking they require.
Actions
The suite of documents we developed addresses
all of the internal and external audiences. Each document is tailored
to the audience in terms of experience and subject matter, and
all of the documents emphasize clear procedures and generous illustration
to make them as usable as possible.

Documentation: Ideal Industries
Situation
Ideal's cable and network testers are used
worldwide for installation and maintenance of optical and copper
based network systems. They are used by field technicians, who
are required to analyze complex network problems, but who often
have only minimal formal education. And, in a telecom environment,
they are usually burdened with a large volume of documentation
to support these complex and regulated systems.
Actions
We developed a series of print manuals and
job aids to support these field technicians, with an emphasis
on ease of use, illustrations, and simple, clear language. Then,
we converted these materials to highly linked Acrobat files that
could be easily referenced in the field.

Help: iMetrikus
Situation
iMetrikus' web site is used by a growing population
of patients suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes
and HIV/AIDS. These users come from all age and population groups,
and they all need one thing - to be able to upload and review
their personal health records quickly and on a regular basis.
Actions
We created a dynamic web-based Help system
that resides on the iMetrikus host site. The system provides
directions for users to attach and use their home link devices,
and to view their records and generate reports of them. The system
also links to outside resources for device support and reference
to disease treatment information.
