When a user begins working with a new application,
they usually like to have a printed manual on their desk. Once
they are off and running, they prefer using Online Help.
Online Help systems are fully linked electronic
documents that can be built in several styles.
Table of Contents based systems
are fully hyper-linked systems that move between pages through
the Table of Contents and internal page links. No matter where
you are in a software application, you will always begin at the
Table of Contents when you select the Help button.
Context Sensitive systems are
tied to specific locations within your application. Your programmers
will need to enter ID fields in their application code, and these
ID fields will then be tied to specific locations within the Help
system. When users are on a screen within your application and
need help, the Help button will take them to a specific Help system
page.
